Delaware School Psychologist Continuing Education Requirements
Delaware school psychologists hold a School Psychologist Standard Certificate along with a Delaware educator license. The School Psychologist Standard Certificate itself is not renewed, but the underlying educator license must remain current and valid.
Delaware School Psychologist Requirements at a Glance
How Delaware School Psychologist Certification Works
Delaware requires school psychologists providing services to children in Delaware public schools to hold a School Psychologist Standard Certificate.
The Standard Certificate remains valid as long as the educator's Delaware license remains current and valid. Delaware regulations specifically state that the School Psychologist Standard Certificate itself is not subject to renewal.
As a result, continuing education requirements are tied primarily to renewal of the educator's Continuing License rather than to renewal of the school psychology certificate.
90 Clock Hours Every Five Years
A Delaware educator holding a Continuing License must complete 90 clock hours of professional development or professional learning during the five-year term of the license.
These hours must be completed during the dates covered by the current Continuing License and approved before the renewed license is issued.
At least 45 of the required 90 hours must consist of activities relating to the educator's work with students or staff.
Delaware Clock-Hour Conversions
Delaware permits several types of academic and continuing education credit to be converted into clock hours for license-renewal purposes.
What Professional Development Can Count?
Delaware allows a range of professional development and professional learning activities toward Continuing License renewal, provided the activity meets applicable Delaware requirements and is properly documented and approved.
For school psychologists, relevant professional development may include:
- Psychoeducational assessment
- Academic intervention
- Behavior assessment and intervention
- School psychology ethics
- Special education law
- Section 504
- Data-based decision making
- School mental health
- Consultation and collaboration
- Trauma-informed practice
- Family-school collaboration
- Equitable and culturally responsive practice
- Evidence-based interventions
- Other professional learning related to school psychology practice
Professional Development Documentation
Delaware educators enter professional development activities through the DEEDS Educator Dashboard. Activities not automatically transferred from Delaware's professional development system must generally be entered manually and accompanied by appropriate verification documentation.
- Course or professional development title
- Provider or sponsoring organization
- Date of completion
- Number of clock hours completed
- Certificate or other completion documentation
- College transcript when academic credit is used
For educators employed by a Delaware public school or charter school, the employer's human resources office generally reviews and approves submitted clock hours. For educators who are not employed by a Delaware public or charter school, the Delaware Department of Education reviews the hours.
Can Online Continuing Education Count in Delaware?
Delaware's renewal regulations allow qualifying professional development and professional learning activities to be applied toward the 90-clock-hour requirement when the activity satisfies the state's professional learning standards and documentation requirements.
School psychologists using an online course toward Delaware license renewal should retain the completion certificate and confirm acceptance with their employer or the Delaware Department of Education when needed.
Do NASP-Approved Courses Count in Delaware?
NASP-approved professional development is directly relevant to the professional practice of school psychology and may be used toward applicable NCSP renewal requirements.
For Delaware educator-license renewal, an individual course must still satisfy Delaware's requirements for acceptable professional development and be appropriately documented and approved.

The NCSP Can Also Be Used for Initial Delaware Certification
Delaware regulations provide an additional pathway to the School Psychologist Standard Certificate for an applicant who holds a Nationally Certified School Psychologist (NCSP) credential in good standing.
This NCSP pathway relates to issuance of the School Psychologist Standard Certificate. It does not replace the continuing professional development requirements associated with renewal of a Delaware Continuing License.
