What Can Count Toward Ohio School Psychologist CE?

Ohio requires continuing education used for renewal to be relevant to the practice of psychology in both subject matter and professional level.

Qualifying continuing education may be approved by organizations recognized in Ohio law, including the State Board of Psychology, the Ohio Psychological Association, the Ohio School Psychologists Association, the American Psychological Association, the State Board of Education, and the National Association of School Psychologists.

The continuing education activity must also meet applicable Ohio requirements for administration, attendance records, course design, and professional responsibility.

Can NASP-Approved Courses Count for Ohio Renewal?

✓
Yes — Ohio Law Specifically Recognizes NASP

Ohio Revised Code §4732.141 identifies the National Association of School Psychologists as an acceptable continuing education approving organization for school psychologists.

This is stronger than the language used by many states. Ohio does not merely rely on a general professional-association category; NASP is specifically named in the statute.

A NASP-approved course that is relevant to the practice of school psychology and otherwise meets Ohio's CE requirements may therefore be used toward Ohio school psychologist continuing education requirements.

Important: Ohio also requires qualifying CE completion to be properly recorded through the applicable Ohio continuing education tracking process. Licensees should follow Ohio School Psychologists Association and State Board of Psychology instructions for recording completed CE.
REQUIRED CONTENT AREA

Ohio's 4-Hour Ethics and Culture Requirement

Within the 50-hour continuing education requirement, Ohio requires at least 4 hours of continuing education in one or more specified professional areas.

Professional Conduct Continuing education related to professional standards, responsibilities, boundaries, and conduct may qualify.
Ethics Ethics training relevant to the practice of psychology may be used toward the required four hours.
Culture & Ethnic Identity Training addressing the role of culture or ethnic identity in assessment, consultation, or psychological intervention may qualify.
CE RECORDING

How Ohio Continuing Education Is Recorded

Ohio requires licensees to certify completion of the required continuing education when registering for renewal.

Ohio rules provide that documentation of continuing education completion is maintained through the Ohio Psychological Association or Ohio School Psychologists Association, as applicable.

School psychologists should ensure that qualifying CE is properly documented and recorded before the renewal deadline.

✓ Complete qualifying CE activities
✓ Retain certificates of completion
✓ Ensure CE is properly recorded
✓ Certify compliance when renewing
NEW LICENSE HOLDERS

Reduced Requirements May Apply During the First Renewal Cycle

Ohio adjusts the continuing education requirement for some school psychologists depending on when the initial license is issued during the five-year renewal cycle.

A school psychologist licensed during the first three years of the quinquennial renewal period may generally be required to complete 28 clock hours of CE for the first renewal rather than the full 50 hours.

Different exemptions or renewal timing rules may apply to school psychologists licensed during the fourth or fifth year of the cycle.

First Renewal

Years 1–3 Generally 28 CE hours
Year 4 CE exemption may apply for that renewal
Year 5 Initial license may extend beyond the next renewal deadline

IMPORTANT LICENSE DISTINCTION

Independent School Psychologist Licenses Have Different Requirements

Ohio distinguishes between a school psychologist license and an independent school psychologist license.

Independent school psychologists are generally subject to a different renewal cycle and continuing education requirement. Ohio law currently requires psychologists and independent school psychologists to complete 23 hours of CE during a two-year period, including at least 4 hours in professional conduct, ethics, culture, ethnic identity, or a combination of those areas.

This page focuses primarily on the standard Ohio licensed school psychologist requirement of 50 CE hours during a five-year renewal cycle.
ALSO AN NCSP?

The Same NASP-Approved CE May Serve Both Credentials

Nationally Certified School Psychologists have separate NASP continuing professional development requirements. Because Ohio explicitly recognizes NASP-approved continuing education, qualifying NASP-approved courses may be useful toward both Ohio license renewal and NCSP renewal when the requirements of each credential are met.
