Coursework Requirements for Renewal
A school psychologist renewing a five-year Professional Student Support Certificate generally completes six semester hours of eligible coursework unless an exemption applies.
When Is Additional Coursework Not Required?
West Virginia provides several circumstances in which an educator does not need to complete additional coursework for renewal.
A school psychologist who has achieved an MA+30 salary classification may renew an eligible professional certificate without completing additional coursework.
An educator who is at least 60 years old may also qualify for the coursework exemption under current WVDE rules.

Permanent Professional Student Support Certificate
West Virginia allows eligible school psychologists to convert a Professional Student Support Certificate to a Permanent Professional Student Support Certificate.
One common pathway involves holding an eligible professional certificate, possessing a master's degree, and completing five years of full-time educational experience, including required experience in the specialization and in a West Virginia public or accredited private school.
Once issued, the Permanent Professional Student Support Certificate remains valid unless surrendered, suspended, or revoked.
West Virginia Recognizes the NCSP Credential
WVDE expressly recognizes national certification through the National Association of School Psychologists for eligible Professional Student Support Personnel.
West Virginia school psychologists who hold a valid NCSP and work in the West Virginia public school system may qualify for state programs associated with national certification.
WVDE currently provides an application pathway for an annual $2,500 salary supplement for eligible student-support professionals holding qualifying national certification, including NASP certification, subject to available legislative funding and program rules.
