Connecticut School Psychologist Continuing Education Requirements

Connecticut school psychologists hold an educator certificate endorsed for School Psychologist (#070). Connecticut no longer requires a fixed number of Continuing Education Units (CEUs) to maintain a Professional Educator Certificate, although school districts provide ongoing professional learning for employed educators.

Important: Connecticut eliminated the Continuing Education Unit requirement for maintaining Professional Educator Certificates effective July 1, 2012. Therefore, a Connecticut school psychologist does not have a fixed state CEU total that must be submitted to renew a Professional Educator Certificate.

No Fixed CEU Requirement for Professional Certificate Renewal

Connecticut law eliminated the former CEU requirement for maintaining a Professional Educator Certificate.

As a result, school psychologists holding the Professional Educator Certificate are not required to submit a specified number of CEUs to the Connecticut State Department of Education when renewing that certificate.

CSDE's current renewal guidance specifically states that documentation of professional development or CEUs is not required when renewing a Professional Certificate.

Connecticut District Professional Learning

Although CEUs are no longer required for state educator-certificate renewal, Connecticut continues to require local school districts to provide professional learning opportunities for their educators.

Connecticut State Department of Education guidance states that districts are responsible for offering at least 18 hours of professional development per year to the educators they employ.

This professional learning is intended to be tailored to the needs of individual educators and is tracked at the district level rather than submitted to CSDE as CEUs for Professional Certificate renewal.

Important distinction: The annual district professional learning expectation is not the same thing as a statewide requirement to submit 18 CE hours when renewing a Professional Educator Certificate.

Professional Learning for Connecticut School Psychologists

Connecticut defines professional learning broadly as relevant individual and collaborative opportunities designed to enhance professional practice and improve student outcomes.

Professional development for school psychologists may address areas such as:

  • Psychoeducational assessment
  • Academic intervention
  • Behavior assessment and intervention
  • School psychology ethics
  • Special education law
  • Section 504
  • Data-based decision making
  • School mental health
  • Consultation and collaboration
  • Trauma-informed practice
  • Family-school collaboration
  • Culturally responsive practice
  • Evidence-based interventions
  • School-wide prevention and support systems

Connecticut School Psychologist Certification Structure

School psychologists are certified by the Connecticut State Department of Education under School Psychologist endorsement #070.

Connecticut transitioned to a two-tier educator certification continuum beginning July 1, 2025: Initial and Professional. Existing provisional certificates remain valid through their stated expiration dates, but new provisional certificates are no longer issued.

School Psychologist Preparation

Initial certification generally requires graduate preparation in school psychology, including at least 45 semester hours of graduate study and a ten-school-month internship under appropriate supervision.

Advancement to the Professional Educator Certificate for school psychology requires additional graduate preparation, including at least 60 semester hours of graduate credit in psychology and related areas.

Can Online Continuing Education Be Used in Connecticut?

Because Connecticut no longer maintains a state CEU approval system for Professional Educator Certificate renewal, the Connecticut State Department of Education does not approve individual CE providers or issue provider numbers for this purpose.

Online professional development may still be useful as part of a school psychologist's district professional learning plan, professional growth activities, or separate national credential requirements such as the NCSP.

Educators who plan to use an outside online course toward district professional learning should follow their employer's procedures for approval and documentation.

Do NASP-Approved Courses Count in Connecticut?

Connecticut does not require a set number of state-approved CEUs for Professional Educator Certificate renewal, so NASP Approved Provider status is not needed to satisfy a Connecticut state CEU requirement.

NASP-approved professional development remains particularly useful for school psychologists who maintain the Nationally Certified School Psychologist (NCSP) credential or whose school district accepts the activity as part of local professional learning.

Child & School Psychology CE

Child & School Psychology CE is a NASP Approved Provider, Provider #1152. Qualifying courses may be used toward applicable NCSP continuing professional development requirements.

Connecticut school psychologists may also wish to check with their employing district regarding use of outside professional development activities within the district's professional learning system.

School Psychologist Certification vs. Licensed Psychologist CE

Connecticut school psychologist educator certification should not be confused with Connecticut Department of Public Health licensure as a psychologist.

A psychologist licensed through the Connecticut Department of Public Health has a separate continuing education requirement of 10 hours during each annual registration period. Those requirements apply to the DPH psychology license, not simply because an individual holds a school psychologist educator certificate.

For this page: The requirements above focus on Connecticut's School Psychologist #070 educator certification, not a separate Department of Public Health psychologist license.

Maintaining Your NCSP?

Connecticut Professional Educator Certificate renewal does not require a fixed number of CEUs, but NCSP renewal has separate continuing professional development requirements.

Connecticut school psychologists who maintain the NCSP should continue to track qualifying CPD separately for national certification renewal.
