Hawaii School Psychologist Continuing Education Requirements
Hawaii is different from every other state because it currently does not maintain a separate state certification or licensure system specifically for school psychologists practicing in school settings. As a result, there is no state school psychologist credential with a continuing education requirement that must be renewed on a fixed cycle.
Hawaii School Psychologist Requirements at a Glance
Why Doesn't Hawaii Have a School Psychologist CE Requirement?
Most states regulate school psychologists through an educator certification agency, professional licensing board, or both. Those credentials normally have a renewal cycle and continuing education requirements.
Hawaii currently operates differently. School psychologists may be employed in school settings without holding a separate Hawaii school psychologist credential issued through a state school psychology licensing system.
Because there is no state school psychology credential to renew, Hawaii has not established a corresponding requirement such as 30, 60, 75, or 100 continuing education hours every several years.
Hawaii Department of Education School Psychologists
The Hawaii State Department of Education employs school psychologists as professional support-services personnel.
The Department's support-services classification system includes School Psychologist, Class Code 47.434.
Employment qualifications and personnel requirements for a Hawaii DOE position are different from a state professional-license renewal requirement. An employer may require or encourage professional learning even when the state does not impose a specific CE-hour requirement for renewal of a school psychology credential.
What About the NCSP?
Hawaii school psychologists may hold the Nationally Certified School Psychologist (NCSP) credential even though Hawaii does not currently require a separate state school psychologist license.
The NCSP is administered nationally and has its own continuing professional development requirements.
Therefore, a Hawaii school psychologist who maintains the NCSP must still complete NASP's required CPD even though Hawaii itself does not require CE for renewal of a state school psychologist credential.
Do NASP-Approved Courses Count for Hawaii School Psychologists?
Because Hawaii currently has no school psychologist state-license renewal CE requirement, there is no Hawaii state CE approval system that a NASP-approved course must satisfy for school psychologist credential renewal.
NASP-approved professional development remains useful for school psychologists who maintain the NCSP and for practitioners completing professional learning for employment, professional growth, or competency development.

Is Hawaii Creating a School Psychologist License?
Hawaii has considered school psychologist licensure legislation repeatedly in recent years.
Proposed measures have included specialist-level and doctoral school psychologist licenses, NCSP-based pathways, internship and Praxis requirements, and continuing education requirements.
Those proposals are important for understanding where Hawaii may be headed, but proposed legislation should not be treated as a current licensing or CE requirement.
School Psychologist vs. Hawaii Licensed Psychologist
Hawaii's lack of a separate school psychologist credential should not be confused with the state's existing psychologist license.
Hawaii licenses psychologists through the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Board of Psychology. That license generally requires doctoral-level psychology preparation and is a separate professional credential.
A school psychologist who separately holds a Hawaii psychologist license must comply with the requirements applicable to that license. Those requirements do not automatically apply to every person employed as a school psychologist in a school setting.
If You Also Hold a Hawaii Psychologist License
Hawaii psychologist licenses are renewed on a different schedule through the Hawaii Board of Psychology. Current DCCA information shows psychologist licenses renew by June 30 of each even-numbered year.
Those requirements belong to the psychologist license and should not be represented as Hawaii school psychologist credential requirements.
Keep the Credentials Separate
School psychologist employed in a school: no separate Hawaii school psychology CE renewal requirement.
Hawaii licensed psychologist: separate DCCA Board of Psychology licensing and renewal rules apply.
NCSP: separate NASP CPD requirements apply.
Can Hawaii School Psychologists Take Online CE?
Yes. Online professional development may be useful for maintaining the NCSP, meeting employer professional-learning expectations, or maintaining professional competence.
However, because Hawaii currently has no state school psychologist renewal CE requirement, an online course does not need to be converted into a specific Hawaii school psychology CE credit for state credential renewal.
