Continuing Professional Development Requirements

Maine School Psychologist Continuing Education Requirements

Maine school psychologists holding the School Psychologist Certificate (093) may renew their professional certificate through several pathways, including completion of continuing professional development consistent with current NCSP renewal standards.

3 Paths To Meet Renewal Requirements
Important: Maine does not require every school psychologist to complete 75 CPD hours. For renewal of the 3-year professional School Psychologist Certificate (093), the Maine Department of Education provides three renewal pathways. A current NCSP credential or a current Maine psychologist license may satisfy the professional renewal requirement instead of documenting 75 CPD hours.

Three Ways to Meet Maine's Renewal Requirement

For renewal of a 3-year professional School Psychologist Certificate, Maine identifies three ways to satisfy the professional renewal requirement.

1

Maintain the NCSP

Hold a valid and current Nationally Certified School Psychologist (NCSP) credential issued through the National School Psychology Certification System.

2

Hold a Maine Psychology License

Hold a valid and current license issued by the Maine Board of Examiners of Psychologists.

3

Complete 75 CPD Hours

Provide evidence of 75 hours of continuing professional development completed during the previous three years and consistent with current NCSP renewal standards.

The 75-Hour Continuing Professional Development Route

School psychologists who use Maine's continuing professional development pathway must document 75 hours of CPD during the preceding three years.

Maine specifically states that these activities must be consistent with the current NCSP renewal standards. Because NCSP standards can be revised over time, school psychologists should review the current NASP/NCSP CPD requirements when planning a renewal cycle.

NASP-APPROVED PROVIDER

Courses From Child & School Psychology CE

Child & School Psychology CE is a NASP Approved Provider (Provider #1152). Courses designated for NASP-approved CPD may be used toward applicable NCSP continuing professional development requirements when the course and activity meet the applicable renewal rules.

NCSP-Aligned Continuing Professional Development

Because Maine incorporates current NCSP renewal standards into its 75-hour renewal pathway, school psychologists using this option should plan professional development with the current NCSP CPD rules in mind.

Current NCSP renewal requirements include a total of 75 hours of continuing professional development during the renewal cycle, along with designated professional development requirements established by the National School Psychology Certification Board.

ETHICS / LEGAL

Ethics and Legal Professional Development

Current NCSP standards include professional development addressing ethics and/or legal regulation of school psychology. School psychologists using Maine's CPD pathway should make sure their renewal activities satisfy the current NCSP requirement in effect for their renewal cycle.

DIVERSITY & EQUITY

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusive Practice

Current NCSP standards also include continuing professional development related to equitable practice, diversity, and serving diverse student populations. Verify the specific requirement that applies to your NCSP renewal cycle.

Do NASP-Approved Courses Count in Maine?

Yes, NASP-approved professional development can be especially relevant for Maine school psychologists using the 75-hour CPD pathway. Maine requires those hours to be consistent with current NCSP renewal standards, and NASP-approved continuing professional development is one of the recognized forms of professional learning within the NCSP system.

For NCSP holders: Completing qualifying NASP-approved CPD can allow the same professional development activity to support both NCSP renewal and, where applicable, Maine's state school psychologist renewal requirements.
