Texas School Psychologist Renewal Overview
What Can Count Toward Texas Professional Development?
Texas requires professional development used for license renewal to be directly related to the practice of psychology.
Professional development may include structured continuing education, conferences, workshops, trainings, professional programs, and other learning activities that satisfy the applicable Texas requirements.
At least half of the required hours must come from qualifying provider categories identified by the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council.

Can NASP-Approved Courses Count for Texas Renewal?
Texas does not require every individual professional development course to be separately pre-approved by the Behavioral Health Executive Council. Instead, Texas focuses on whether the activity is directly related to psychology and whether required hours come from qualifying provider categories.
Texas recognizes international, national, regional, state, and local associations of medical, mental, or behavioral health professionals as qualifying provider categories.
The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) is a national professional association representing school psychologists. Professional development offered through a NASP-Approved Provider therefore appears consistent with the type of provider contemplated under Texas rules when the course is directly related to psychological practice.

Texas's 50% Provider Rule
At least 50% of a licensee's professional development hours must come from providers that satisfy one of the approved provider criteria.
Texas lists several qualifying provider categories, including professional associations, public educational organizations, government entities, accredited colleges and universities, and certain mental or behavioral health organizations.
The remaining 50% may be obtained from other providers selected by the licensee, provided the activity otherwise qualifies as professional development related to psychology.
Qualifying Providers
Texas Ethics and Distinct-Population Requirements
Texas includes two specific content requirements within the 40-hour professional development requirement.
Human Trafficking Prevention Training
Texas license renewal also requires completion of a human trafficking prevention training course approved by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC).
This is a separate Texas requirement. A general human trafficking continuing education course should not be assumed to satisfy the requirement unless it is an HHSC-approved course.
Reporting Texas Professional Development
The Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council uses CE Broker as its official continuing education tracking system.
Beginning January 1, 2026, licensees must have a CE Broker account and report sufficient professional development before they can renew their license.
A free CE Broker Basic Account satisfies the regulatory requirement.
Keep Documentation of Completed Professional Development
Texas licensees should retain appropriate documentation showing completion of professional development used toward license renewal.
