School Psychology
Course Overview
Psychoeducational assessment requires more than the
standardized administration and interpretation of tests.
School psychologists must consider cultural, linguistic,
educational, and environmental influences when evaluating
students and determining eligibility for special
education services.
This course examines culturally responsive assessment
practices, disproportionality in special education
identification, potential sources of bias in cognitive
and social-emotional assessment, and equitable
eligibility decision-making.
Participants apply these concepts to realistic
school-based cases involving culturally and
linguistically diverse students, integrating multiple
sources of information with professional judgment.
Professional Application:
Emphasis is placed on identifying potential assessment
bias, considering alternative explanations for
student performance, and developing defensible,
equitable psychoeducational evaluation decisions.
Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course,
participants will be able to:
-
Identify cultural, linguistic, contextual, and
educational factors that may influence
psychoeducational assessment results.
-
Analyze factors contributing to racial, ethnic,
and linguistic disproportionality in special
education referrals and identification.
-
Evaluate the appropriateness and limitations
of cognitive assessment instruments for
culturally and linguistically diverse students.
-
Interpret behavioral and social-emotional
assessment information while considering
cultural expectations, informant differences,
and potential measurement bias.
-
Apply multiple-source assessment practices
and relevant exclusionary considerations
to equitable eligibility determinations.
-
Integrate culturally responsive assessment
principles into complex school-based
psychoeducational case analyses.

patterns, and considerations relevant to equitable
evaluation and eligibility decisions.
Additional instructional explanations, applied examples,
activities, and case studies support the integration of
the reading into professional school psychology practice.
