Ethical and Legal Issues in School-Based Psychological Assessment: Principles and Applied Decision-Making

A 2-credit, self-paced course examining professional ethics, informed consent, confidentiality, student rights, and responsible psychological assessment practices through applied decision-making and school-based case studies.

Course Overview

Ethical psychological assessment requires careful professional judgment at every stage of the evaluation process. Using the 2024 publication Psychological Assessment in School Contexts: Ethical Issues and Practical Guidelines, this course examines the ethical responsibilities of psychologists working in schools, including professional competence, informed consent, confidentiality, appropriate test selection, standardized administration, and defensible interpretation of assessment results. Participants evaluate complex situations involving cultural and linguistic considerations, student and caregiver rights, professional boundaries, and competing expectations from educational teams. Applied case studies emphasize evidence-based reasoning, ethical accountability, and transparent reporting.

Professional Ethics & Competence

Examine ethical responsibilities, professional boundaries, assessment competence, consultation, and independent professional judgment.

Consent, Confidentiality & Student Rights

Evaluate informed consent, student assent, educational records, authorized information sharing, privacy, and test security.

Assessment Ethics & Case Analysis

Apply principles of reliability, validity, cultural and linguistic fairness, and ethical interpretation to challenging school-based cases.

Course Format

This 2-credit course includes four self-paced lessons: three instructional lessons followed by an applied ethical decision-making case-study lesson. Learning activities include guided professional readings, interactive ethical scenarios, assessment interpretation exercises, three extended written case analyses, and a final multiple-choice assessment. The course emphasizes practical application, defensible professional judgment, and ethical decision-making in school-based psychological assessment.
